The story follows ten-year-old Avirat's journey of grief and loss. Avirat searches for a koel bird, that he believes is trying to converse with him. His obsession with finding the bird is a way for him to cope with his mother's death. He is unable to connect with his father, Vasudeva, a folk artist who desires to plant the seeds of devotion and artistry in Avirat's young mind. He trains Avirat to sing, play musical instruments, and ask for charity. Caught between two different worlds, Avirat eventually breaks down. The loss of his father forces him to confront his new grief.
