Middle-class school teacher Indu lives with her unemployed father Moolchand and battles with his gambling addiction that causes periodic financial hiccups for her. When a handsome engineer-cum-poet named Ravi rents a flat in their building, he falls for Indu and turns his charm on to woo her. Soon, the wedding bells chime and Ravi decides to stay with Indu and her father after marriage. Indu resigns from her job and gives birth to a baby boy. But a familial problem arises when Moolchand spends Ravi's hard-earned money on gambling and the latter can't stand it. Ravi puts everyone on a strict budget which forces Indu to start working again to earn her own money. An enraged Ravi then forces Indu to make a choice - either quit the current job or divorce him.
