Saudamini is a bright village girl with academic ambitions and an appetite for literature and philosophy. She is in love with her neighbour Narendra but her family gets her married to a middle-aged widower from a neighbouring village against her wishes. She is unable to adjust with her new life, but she finds a friend in her husband who is hard-working but neglected and ill-treated by the rest of the family. Just as they begin to bond, Narendra visits Saudamini with a hope to revive his romance with her, after which nothing remains the same.
