Set in 16th century AD, the movie brings to life a doomed and tragically defiant love story between the Mughal crown prince Salim (Dilip Kumar) and the beautiful, ill-fated court dancer, Anarkali (Madhubala). Salim is struck by Anarkali's beauty when she paints herself the colour of marble and poses as a statuette to save a court sculptor from losing his face. Their brief encounter gives way to a zealous love affair strongly opposed by the Mughal King, Jalaluddin Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor). The tussle between the father and son escalates to a point where the prince declares war against the Mughal Empire, threatening to bring it to its knees, while the emperor refuses to back down or show mercy to the star-crossed lovers, leading to immense collateral damage.
