This tragic love story follows two childhood friends, Mohan (Dilip Kumar) and Manju (Nargis) who grow up to love each other earnestly, but Manju is betrothed to a much older man. When she goes to meet Mohan, she falls off a cliff and the villagers blame him of committing the crime. Mohan is too devastated to defend himself and hence, gets sentenced to twenty years of imprisonment. What happens when he's finally released?
