The life of Mohan Sharma (Tarun Bose) changes dramatically after his wife dies while giving birth to their daughter, Uma (Sharmila Tagore). Blaming Uma for the tragedy, he never forgives her, but is affectionate towards her under the influence of alcohol. Uma grows up being quiet, submissive and meek, wishing for her father's acceptance. When she meets a sensitive poet Ashok (Dharmendra), he brings her out of her shell and they begin to fall in love. But Mohan has other plans for his daughter, and Uma, afraid to antagonise him any further, will do anything for him.
