Lalita (Meena Kumari) is an orphaned niece of a poor clerk, Gurucharan (Nazir Hussain) who mortgages his house to wed his daughter and is now crushed under a mounting debt. The money-lender is his powerful neighbour whose son, Shekhar (Ashok Kumar) is in love with Lalita. The young lovers are oblivious to the growing discomfort between the elders, but their love is threatened when a wealthy young man named Girin (Asit Baran) offers to pay off Gurucharan's debt, giving rise to an ugly misunderstanding that Lalita has been 'sold' to Girin. Why does Girin help the family? What lies in the fate of the two ill-fated lovers?
