Rajesh (Rajesh Khanna) and Kalpana (Nanda) marry despite the objections of their class-conscious families. To save face, the financially challenged newlyweds tell Kalpana's mother that they're quite well-off - a lie that's quickly put to test. A newborn grandson prompts Kalpana's family to visit her, and the young couple must now work overtime to carry off the rags-to-riches charade.
